A. Signs of Pride

1.   Cannot be Corrected
      If you are a person full of PRIDE, you feel bad when you are corrected. “sa tingin mo, ikaw ay always right”. There is always a ready explanation for everything that you do ex. Full of justifications. And when you are being corrected, you always see the sins and mistakes of others but you do not see your own. “alam ko…, hindi ko naman talaga sinabi yon…, ba’t ikaw?..., alam ko na yan…, siya naman talaga ang may kasalanan…, ganito kasi yun…” PRIDE!!!
      A humble person on the other hand is ready to be corrected. “kahit na masakit, tinatanggap ang corrections… without explaining everything. Actually it is pure and simple PRIDE which is the greatest hindrance to TRUE REPENTANCE.

2.   Cannot Ask for Forgiveness
      Because pride serves as blindfold and you refuse to see your sin, you therefore cannot say “will you please forgive me?” … but rather “bakit ako hihingi ng tawad?... sino ba siya?... kung sino ang may kailangan at may kasalanan siya ang lumapit…” Asking forgiveness from the people you hurt is a sign of humility. If you find it hard to ask forgiveness, then you have a problem with pride in your life.


3.   Cannot Submit
      Pride makes you think you are better and higher than other people that is why it is difficult for you to submit specially to someone who is younger than you or to someone who you think is lower in status than you. You want people to follow you, or do whatever you say but you, yourself cannot submit to your leaders. You want your own sides or plans to be followed. The root cause of rebellion and insubordination is PRIDE.

4.   Cannot say “thank you”
      Pride makes you see that people should be serving you. “Dapat lang  na gawin niya yan… dapat lang na gawin nila yon..” So you are not thankful to people when they do little things for you. Humility on the other hand causes you to be always thankful to God and to man for the things they do or gave no matter how little these things may seem to you.


5.   Cannot appreciate others
      Pride causes you to hide your appreciation to other people. Even if you think they are very good or beautiful or that they did an excellent job, you will not appreciate them because Pride causes you to see, instead the mistakes, the weaknesses, and the failures of people. “Para kang sinsapawan kung pupurihin mo sila o di kaya you will have the feeling na baka lumaki ang ulo ng taong yun…” if this is the case let them be… you don’t have to worry about it… its their accountability to God… as long as you know that you are doing it for the Glory of God, you don’t have to think twice but to appreciate at once. Humility, on the other hand causes you to consider other people better than yourself.
      Philippians 2:3 – “do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit (pride) but in humility consider other better than yourselves.”

6.   Cannot serve others
      The best humility is SERVANTHOOD! Pride wants you to be served; not to serve others. If you are full of pride, tamad ka at ayaw mong maglingkod sa iba. You will only serve with wrong motives. On the other hand, pure, selfless servanthood is possible only if you are humble person. (Matthew 20: 25-28)

Matthew 20:25 -28
25 – But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princess of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
26 – But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
27 – and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
28 – even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to give his life a ransom for many.

7.   Cannot Give
      Pride makes you think of yourself and your needs more than the others. You cannot give your time, money, things, effort, work for others because you are always thinking “paano naman AKO???”

8.   Very Sensitive
      Madali kang masaktan kung may sasabihin sa iyo na correction or anything. Madali kang mapahiya. You are easily hurt because you think highly of yourself. Hindi ka lang pinansin or sinali sa program or sinali sa group, you are already hurt. Biniro ka lang tungkol sa height mo or size mo or way of talking, nasaktan ka kaagad. Napagalitan ka lang, gusto mo nang umuwi o umalis sa ministry.”

9.   Concerned with Reputation
      “Concerned ka sa sasabihin ng tao kaysa sa Diyos.” Pride makes you very self-centered. You are always conscious about your REPUTATION: “Ano ang sasabihin nila sa akin?”…”baka naman isipin nila na ganito AKO”… therefore you are always protecting your reputation.
      Makikipag-away ka pa…in order to protect your reputation if somebody has said something about you. You are a very shallow person since you are only concerned about your outward appearance – what others think of you.
      That is why in front of other people you always want to look your best, “pa-impress”, you show all your talents and abilities” FOR THE SHOW… BUT WHEN NOBODY IS LOOKING AND YOU ARE ALONE, wala rin pala!!!

TWO FACES OF PRIDE:

1.   Superiority complex
   You think of yourself as the TOP GUY. NUMERO UNO… the best among the rest… the STAR of the party and the group is nothing without you. ME, I and MYSELF… ito ang laging bida.
   Therefore, you find it hard to serve, to give, and to appreciate others. You cannot be corrected but you want to correct others because all you see are their faults, weaknesses and mistakes.
   The people with this kind of attitude are usually the ones with a history of being a “spoiled brat” of a kid who always get what he wants because he was very “cute”, smart or the only child. He grew up with “WHATEVER I WANT, I GET’ attitude.
   If you are this kind of person, you better decide to break your heart and get down from your throne because “God resists the proud (kalaban ka ng Diyos!) but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6)”.




2.   Inferiority Complex
   You are sill the center of your thinking although it is on the negative side. “KAWAWA NAMAN AKO… GANITO LANG KASI AKO… Nahihiya ako, kasi baka kung ano ang sabihin nila sa AKIN…”
   Is this a form of Humility? NO!!! it is still self centeredness because you are still in the center. Your concern is still your reputation. Sometimes you cannot serve, you cannot give your testimony because you say “nahihiya AKO”… in that sense, you are not able to give God the glory because of your hiya. When is “HIYA” a form of pride? When you refuse to do things because you are so concerned about what others will say about you. This is FALSE HUMLITY.
   True humility is when you think of others, how to serve them and how to be a blessing to them, without considering what other people would think of you. True humility is when you are so concerned about how GOD SEE YOU. “Ano na lang ang sasabihin ng tao sa akin?...” kahit na ano ang sabihin ng tao sa iyo, ang mahalaga nalulugod ba ang Diyos? That is our main concern in life!

Formula for Misery

   Think about yourself, what you want in life, then think of how people are treating you, keep a record of “wrongs” and create your “museum of injustices”. Remember all the unfair treatment people did to you and soak in the memory of yourself…”kawawa naman AKO…” self is still the center!

Evaluation: What kind of face do you wear? (Face 1: Superiority Complex or Face 2: Inferiority complex? Explain)

ROOTS OF PRIDE

?   LUCIFER said: AKO, I, ME, MYSELF
      Isaiah 14:12-14

12  How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
 13  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
 14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
       From these verses taken from Isiah 14, the fall of Lucifer, God’s original Praise and Worship leader in heaven, had the word “I” five times used. The center of his life is HIMSELF.
      That was the basic reason he was kicked out from his ministry in heaven and thrown out (Ezekiel 28) to the depths of the pit. In the same manner, if you are still full of “I”, “Ako”, “me”, “Myself”, “akin”… you are a candidate to follow in the footsteps of LUCIFER, the paragon (model or perfect example) of PRIDE! Listen to yourself talk. Look at the way you live.
      If you are always first on the list, or if you always want to do things your way, watch out… the basic hindrance to serve God is: “ME, I , MYSELF” “This is graphically illustrated in the fall of Lucifer in Ezekiel 28: 12-19; Isaiah 14:12. The five I is really a big hindrance to serve God.

REMEMBER: “There are only three (3) persons in the Godhead and you are NOT one of them.

RESULTS OF PRIDE:

?   Destruction – Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before fall…

      It is not an issue whether you will fall or not. The bible says the next step if you have pride is: DESTRUCTION! Why is this so? Because if you are full of pride you are fighting agains God ( 1Peter 5:5), and if you fight against God, of course you will be destroyed. Kung mayroon kang pride, ang kaaway mo ay Diyos. (1 Peter 5:5)
      The NO. 1 thing that God hates is a proud man! (Proverbs 6:16-18)

There are five things that the Lord hates, yea five things that are detestable to HIM:

1.   A PROUD LOOK – Lucifer (Ezekiel 28:12-19); (Isaiah 14:12-15)

Ezekiel 12:12-19
12  Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
 13  Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
 14  Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
 15  Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
 16  By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
 17  Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
 18  Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
 19  All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

2.   NEBUCHADNEZZAR- (Daniel 4, 5:20)

Daniel 5:20 - But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

3.   SAUL – ( 1 Samuel 15:12) “nagpatayo ng sariling bantayog”. Saul was a king who never humbled himself but was so concerned with his reputation. He always finds excuses for his sins and blames other people for his misdeeds.

1 Samuel 5:11-12

11 - So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12 - And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.




4.   HEROD – (Acts 12: 20-25) – tinanggap ang pagsamba ng mga tao sa kaniya
20 - And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country.
 21 - And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
 22 - And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.
 23 - And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
 24 - But the word of God grew and multiplied.
 25 - And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark
5.   _________________  (I pray that your name will not be listed as another example of Pride… who will be later DESTROYED)

   PRIDE stinks! “MABAHO”… people can see it, smell it, know it, hear it. People will run away from you – “hindi ka blessing”… People know that you have pride and usually, you are the last one to accept it because you refuse to see yourself having pride but the smell of it is very strong. You cannot hide it.
   All forms of FALSE HUMILITY will be exposed and sooner or later, lalabas ang tunay mong kulay, so do not delay!!!! Find the solution!!!

SOLUTION: DIE TO YOUR SELF

STEP 1:  Die to your selfish ambitions
   
   Your self-centeredness, your “AKO, AKIN, ME, MYSELF, I” must be put to death on the cross. (Romans 6:6-11)


Romans 6:6-11
6 - Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
 7 - For he that is dead is freed from sin.
 8 - Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
 9 - Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
 10 - For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
 11 - Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
DIE TO YOUR SELF!!!!......
STEP 2: BURY
   A dead thing which is not buried will smell so bad. Furthermore, a dead person will not arise anymore… No matter how SWEET IS THE SMELL OF TEMPTATION… a dead man will not rise anymore!!! WHY??? HE IS SIMPLY DEAD!!!
CONCLUSION:
   “In the kingdom of the “SELF” the KING must DIE!!! Palitan ang hari ng puso mo, ipalit si JESUS…

   If you are working in the ministry and you do it “depende sa mood” then you are not serving God at all but YOURSELF. That is because you are serving only if you feel good or if you feel OK.
   The sacrifice of worship comes when you serve God because He is God, not depending on the circumstances. “kung hindi uulan… kung may pamasahe… kung ok ang mga tao sa paligid ko… kung may sundo… kung wala akong sumpong…”  the ONLY reason you should not minister is when you have sin in your heart that you have not repented of, or when you are dealing with a situation that requires you to settle the matter first. If you serve with these things in your heart, your sacrifice of worship will not be accepted, no matter how sincere or how talented you are. Settle yourself and clean up your life first!


DYING TO SELF
Kung ikaw ay nakalimutan, hindi pinansin o hindi ginalang…
At hindi ka nagdamdam o nasaktan man
Kundi ang puso mo ay mapayapa
Dahil alam mong ang Diyos ay nalulugod sa iyo...
Yan ang kamatayan sa sarili!!!

Kung ang ginawa mong mabuti ay tinaguriang mali o masama
At ang iyong mga nais mangyari ay hindi binigyang halaga, at kung ang
Iyong mga payo ay di pinansin,
Kung sa kabila nito ikaw ay hindi umalsa, nagreklamo o nagmukmok,
Yan ang kamatayan sa sarili!!!

Kung kaya mong tiisin ang anumang hirap, pasakit, panlalait o pangungutya
At katulad ni Jesus ay hindi mo ipinagtanggol ang iyong reputasyon
Yan ang kamatayan sa sarili!!!

Kung hindi mo na pinag-uusapan ang iyong sarili,
Magagandang gawa, kadakilaang nakamit,
At hindi ka nangangating marinig ang papuri ng iba,
Bagkus kung ang puso mo ay mayaman sa papuri at pasasalamat sa iba...
Yan ang kamatayan sa sarili.

Kung ikaw ay handang makinig sa karaingan ng iba
At kung kaya mong ilaan ang iyong panahon
Sa kanilang mga problema…

Kung sa kabila ng iyong karamdaman ay kaya mong maramdaman ang kalagayan ng iba at isinasantabi mo ang iyong sariling kapakanan,
Yan ang kamatayan sa sarili…

Kung sa kabila ng pagod mo at pressure sa workplace mo
Ay nagagawa mo pa ring ngumiti at makipag usap ng tama
Mahinahon pa rin ang iyong pagsasalita
Yan ang kamatayan sa sarili…

Sa kabila ng kawalan ng tiwala sa iyo ng ibang tao dahil sa nagawa mong
Mga karumal dumal na kasalanan
Maging ang mga mahal mo sa buhay ay iniwanan ka
Subalit ikaw ay nagpakumababa sa Panginoon at inako mo lahat ng kasalanan mo
At dahil dito hindi mo binalingan ang mga taong nanakit sa iyo
Bagkus pagmamahal ng Diyos ang ipinakita mo
Hindi ka nanumbat o ipinagtanggol ang sarili mo

FAITHFULNESS


Meditation:
Luke 16:10-12

FAITHFULNESS  - according to Webster, it is steadfastness in adherence to promises or in observance of duty. It is the quality of steadfastness, always remaining constantly dependable, loyal and responsible. (sa lahat ng bagay na ginagawa mo ng tuloy-tuloy hindi pabago-bago)

   You can always trust and depend on God because He is a faithful God. For sure, whatever He says He will do, He will do it! His promises are sure and He will never fail you. (Numbers 23:19-20). You can always trust that He will do His promises because He is FAITHFUL GOD! The question is: Can He trust you? Are you dependable? Do you do what you say you will do? Are you reliable (mapagkakatiwalaan ka ba)? Are you FAITHFUL? (Ang Diyos, mapagkakatiwalaan. Ang tanong: Mapagkakatiwalaan ka ba ng Diyos? Ang lahat ng sinabi at pangako ng Diyos ay ginagawa at tinutupad niya. Per ikaw??? Ang pangko mo ba sa Diyos ay ginagawa mo?)



MARKS OF THE UNFAITHFUL MAN: (Check and evaluate yourself for improvement’s sake)

1. Many unfinished tasks:  If you are always starting something new and you get excited each time but you seldom finish what you have begun, you have a problem with faithfulness. Always starting, but never accomplishing anything, you do not have the steadfastness or stick to the responsibility of what you have started once it gets difficult. Some people try to run from their responsibility once it gets difficult or once there are persecutions or temptations for better opportunities. These people cannot stick to what they are doing “through thick and thin”.

2. Forgetful:  Forgets commitments, assigned works or even borrowed things. An unfaithful servant is one who is not taking full responsibility for things he has borrowed or for assigned works. When he gets done using the borrowed items, he does not return it immediately but does not know where it is, or does not take care of it. Sometimes the borrowed item stays with him for over a year or for a very long time and he does not return it unless you get it from him. He does not have an organizer and so he tends to forget his appointments or scheduled activities. He cannot also be trusted with responsibilities because he has always an excuse of forgetting things assigned for him to do.

3. Irresponsible:  refuses to take the blame for his faults. An unfaithful servant always has a built-in excuse for his unfinished job. He is not accountable because he always shifts the blame to someone or something. If a job has been assigned to you, take full responsibility! If you failed or something happened along the way, be willing to take responsibility and face the consequences.
   “MEA CULPA!” (MY MISTAKE) IS A VERY RARE DECLARATION THAT WE HEAR TODAY… Often times, when something is wrong, everybody looks for somebody to blame on to. It takes guts to face the world and say, “I am responsible. I take full responsibility.” “Charge it to my account”… (“kasalanan ko. Handa kong tanggapin ang anumang karampatang aksiyon…”) The mark of an unfaithful man is just the opposite.

4. Inconsistent – (pabago-bago ng isip) One mark of the unfaithful servant is a changeable mind. His decisions are very shaky and therefore, not dependable. He is easily influenced by other people or by outward circumstances and therefore you cannot expect him to stick to his responsibility of to be loyal to his superiors. He cannot therefore be trusted with responsibilities because he can easily change his mind or perception about things.

5. Obedient only when somebody is watching – An unfaithful servant does his responsibility only when someone is watching him and he has no choice but to work. However, when he is alone and he is not expected to do something, he will not work. A faithful servant on the other hand works even without somebody checking on him. He has the initiative and works without anybody telling him what to do.

6. Emotional – (madaling masaktan) an unfaithful servant works based on his emotions. When he feels good, he is responsible but when things go wrong, he gets hurt, he is angry, or he is “not in the mood”, his performance is very poor. The work of this person is highly dependent on his moods. He gets carried away by his mood swings and he becomes a victim of his own making. He cannot entrusted with great responsibilities because once he suffers a negative emotion, his job becomes drastically affected.

7. Quitter – An unfaithful servant cannot run along distance marathon. He does not have the stamina or the STAYING POWER, or the power to remain the race in spite of the difficulties, hardships, persecutions, tiredness and pain involved in long distance running. Persistence to finish what they have started is their burning passion. However, to the unfaithful servant, to QUIT is the easiest way out to escape the pain, the hardships and the challenge brought by the trials of life.

8. Always late – a man who does not consider the time of other people is not faithful in keeping his time. If he sets an appointment with someone, he is always late. He makes the other person wait, not thinking of the time being wasted. If he agrees to schedule a meeting or practice at a certain time, he does not care if he let the others wait and lose time because of him. My friend, if this is you, REPENT! You are wasting the time of the person or persons you have set the time with. If you cannot make it on time because of a hectic schedule, or if an emergency occurs, have the responsibility to call or to send someone ahead to notify the others of your change of schedule. Faithfulness in time is a virtue we Filipinos must master.

9.  Promise-breakers – Faithful men keep their promises or pledges. Unfaithful men however, are not true to their word. They easily declare promises yet are not able to keep them. Making a vow unto the Lord and not keeping it is a common thing Christians do. But then, the Bible declares how God sees a person who vows unto Him and does not keep it. Ecclesiastes 5:1-6 declares that God does not have pleasure on these kinds of people whom He calls fools! Mas mabuti na lang na huwag kang mangako kaysa nangako ka sa Diyos at hindi mo ginawa.” At this moment, stop and think of the promises you have said before God. You may have declared a vow before God. It is not enough to say….”oooooopppsss… sorry Lord…”


JOSEPH: A CASE STUDY ON FAITHFULNESS

   The principle of faithfulness is best seen in Joseph’s life ( Genesis 37 – 48). He was only seventeen years old in Chapter 37 when God spoke to him through a dream that he was going to be a great and successful man and that he would eventually reign over his own brothers. However, the chapters immediately following were definitely not on the right track that Joseph might have imagined. First, he was thrown in the pit left to die, then he was sold as a slave in Egypt and then to make things worst, he was unjustly accused of a crime he did not commit and was thrown in prison.
   He had all the right reasons to question the God who promised him success when he was seventeen years old. He has all the reasons to complain and to rebel because virtually everything was UNFAIR! He could gather around a mob and rally around the House of God with placards bearing the sign “GOD IS UNFAIR” or “WHY DO THE RIGHTEOUS SUFFER?” or he could do a hunger strike just to prove his point. But then all throughout this heart-rending story, you would see this precious young man going through all these injustices, bearing all the pains, and working silently but FAITHFULLY until one beautiful day, thirteen long years after, a day which he did not in the least expect, God came through and fulfilled his promise to him.
   Who would expect that a Hebrew slave turned prisoner would be the PRIME MINISTER OF EGYPT, next in command to Pharaoh. For thirteen long rears, Joseph lives as a prime model of FAITHFULNESS:

JOSEPH: A MODEL OF FAITHFULNESS, GOD’S MODEL OF SUCCESS

1. JOSEPH THE SLAVE – (Genesis 39:1-20) After Joseph received God’s Word through a dream and told this to his jealous brothers, they planned to kill him. However, he was sold to Egypt instead as a slave and Potiphar bought him and used him as his slave. But God was with Joseph (verse 2) and his master SAW THAT GOD WAS WITH HIM and he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put into his hand (verse 3)… Come to think of it… How did Potiphar SEE that God was with him? If you were sent to a far-away place where nobody knew you, would they SEE that God was with you? The answer to that question is up to you, but with Joseph, it was very evident. He was a slave and how do you see that God was with a slave? Potiphar probably saw how Joseph woke up very early in the morning and prayed, and as he worked Potiphar probably observed that he was excellent in his job. Everything he did was simply the BEST. Then he noticed that whenever he gave Joseph some money for the budget of his household, every cent was accounted for and he never stole anything, “borrowed” anything and that everything was kept on record. He probably noticed that he was not lazy, but very industrious and very honest. In other words, he was a model of FAITHFULNESS. Then finally, Potiphar noticed that everything Joseph did prospered and so finally he came to conclusion that …”God is with this man… I will make him ruler of my household…”(verse 3-4). How was Joseph as a slave? HE WAS SIMPLY THE BEST SLAVE… and he was promoted.

2. JOSEPH THE PRISONER – (Genesis 39:21-40) When things were going well for Joseph and he was now the ruler of the household of Potiphar, things went unfair once again and he was being accused of a crime he did not commit. Unable to defend himself, he was suddenly thrown into prison / jail and was demoted into being a prisoner. That was definitely a situation worse than being a slave! However, that did not change the attitude of Joseph. No bitterness, resentment, rebellion or anything of that sort was seen his life. In fact, God was with him still and he found favor in the sight of the jail warden just as he found favor in the sight of Potiphar (Genesis 39:21-23). What did the jail keeper and Potiphar see in Joseph? Why is it that the people whom Joseph worked for always promote him? The answer is GOD WAS WITH HIM AND… THEY SAW THAT GOD WAS WITH HIM… They did not see any trace of laziness, bitterness, dishonesty or ungodliness in him. In that cold place where the outcasts of society were thrown which is called “prison”, Joseph lived as a light, encouraging other people in spite of the fact that he was the one who needed encouragement. He did not seek comfort from others regarding the injustice he experienced in the hands of Potiphar or in the hands of his very own brothers. Instead, he chose to forget his own bitter past and decided to be a blessing in that cold prison cell. My friend, have you been to that place where everything was unfair but then you chose to be faithful to whatever responsibilities you have? Many times, we complain. “Ba’t ganoon sila? Bakit dito ako na-assign? Unfair naman sila. Bakit???” Many times we complain when we find ourselves in situation and that we do NOT deserve. We forget the fact that like Joseph, God is with us. God is in control of every situation and that God is working out everything together for good to them that love God and have been called for His service (Romans 8:28). How was Joseph as the prisoner? Of course, HE WAS THE BEST PRISONER… and he was promoted in the jail. He’s the Key and Gate Keeper of the prison…

3. JOSEPH THE PRIME MINISTER – (Genesis 41:38-46) Finally, at thirty years of age, Joseph began to see the reality of the dream that God showed him thirteen years earlier when he was just a teen-ager. Thirteen years of pain and injustice… thirteen years of living AS IF GOD HAS ALREADY FORGOTTEN HIM. Thirteen years of modeling the life of a true servant of God: A life of FAITHFULNESS… A life that is consistent, steadfast, and having a Godly attitude in all situations of life from bad to worse. Joseph finally received his highest promotion: from slave to prisoner and from prisoner to PRIME MINISTER. When he was able to live Godly in the lowest and darkest times of his life, he was also able to live Godly in the brightest and most successful times in his life. My friend, that is faithfulness: “When you are able to live consistently as a blessing to others whether you are in pain or at the peak of success, that means, IT DOES NOT DEPEND ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES! The only key in living a life like Joseph is FAITH… YOU ONLY BECOME A FAITHFUL MAN IF YOU ARE FULL OF FAITH!!!”  If you are full of faith that God is in control of every situation you are in, you will also live faithfully. You will not complain, rebel or grumble against anybody but you will faithfully do whatever you are asked to do because you know that in all these things, YOUR GOD IS IN CONTROL.

   Let us be like Joseph… let us be faithful in all things at all times. We should not depend on our feelings or circumstances but let us walk by faith and not by sight. In that way, we will be faithful.
   
   My friend, BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED! Where are you planted right now? Are you a slave? Are you in the jail? Are you a student? Are you a father? A mother? A musician? A cell leader? Wherever you are, bloom there and be the BEST SERVANT, BEST Student, BEST father, BEST mother, BEST musician AND BE THE BEST THAT YOU CAN BE!!!... and you will see, you will find favor in the sight of God.
   In God’s time, YOU WILL BE PROMOTED! The principle involved in faithfulness is simple: if you are faithful in small things, God will entrust greater things to you. For PROMOTION COMES NEITHER FROM THE EAST NOR FROM THE WEST, NOR FROM THE SOUTH. BUT GOD IS THE JUDGE; HE PUTS DOWN ONE AND STEPS UP ANOTHER ( Psalms 75:6-7)

   The attitude of Joseph in the WORST AND BEST SITUATION remained consistent. When in the WORST of circumstances, he did not become bitter or angry and when in the BEST of circumstances, he did not become proud and revengeful to the people who were unfair to him. Let us study the life of this man of God and let him influence our lives in the area of faithfulness!

JOSEPH WAS A FAITHFUL MAN AND A FAITHFUL MAN IS ALWAYS A VICTOR, NEVER A VICTIM

   Many times, like Joseph, we may have felt that we have been forgotten… that God has closed his eyes and left us to suffer… that people hurt us so bad and we did nothing to deserve their unfair treatment… during these times, we may choose to be the VICTIM of our circumstances and not the VICTOR. If we begin to give in to these feelings of rejection, we have just signed our name to be the VICTIM but if we choose to be strong and to believe that God is still in control no matter how unfair and how painful the circumstance is, we have aligned ourselves to what God has called us to be: MORE THAN CONQUERORS!

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF FAITHFULNESS: APPLYING THE LUKE 16 PRINCIPLE

1. Faithfulness in small things – “He that is faithful in small things is faithful in much; and he that unjust in the least is unjust also in much” (Luke 16:10). This Biblical principle is a practical application of how we can be faithful. The first consideration is in material things. For instance, if you are responsible in taking care of how we can be faithful. The first consideration is in material things. For instance, if you are responsible in taking care of material things no matter how insignificant or small they may seem to be, then you can be entrusted with bigger things. The thing is, if you are faithful in taking care of a bicycle, that means God can entrust a car to you in the long run. But if in little things you are not responsible and things are easily destroyed or lost in your care, that means you are poor in taking care of things entrusted to you. Take extra care in protecting your books, Bible and every material possession that you have. If some of your things were left outside the house and they might be destroyed under the rain, keep them immediately. Remember, small things are the gauges (sukatan) if you are responsible or not.

   Example: FOOD – In the Bible even Jesus displayed a simple act of faithfulness in small things. When He fed the people with “fish and bread” miracle, there was so much left-over (Mark 6:33-45). Notice in verse 43: “and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments and of the fishes…” A very simple statement that was included in the WORD OF GOD. Why??? Because this reflects that Jesus Himself was not wasteful. He knew that the food was God’s gift and it should never be wasted. Therefore, he let them gather the left over. Many of us who call ourselves Christians waste a lot of food or things and throw them. Whenever food is wasted because of our negligence, it must leave a certain degree of pain in you heart. Who are we to let the food be wasted when we have no power even to create food for us to eat? Next time food is wasted on our plate, in our kitchen, or on the table, SHAME ON US to the nth degree… The rule of thumb is that you get only the amount of food you can eat. In the kitchen, do everything to protect the food from being destroyed.

   PRINCIPLE – faithfulness first in the natural then the spiritual

2. Faithfulness in Money – “if therefore, ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? (Luke 16:11)

   The way we handle money is a very great indicator of our spirituality. Where do you spend your money? That is a reflection of your value system because we spend our money on the things that we value. What do you buy? Where do you go? As the Bible states… for where your treasure is, there your heart be also”…
   Also, as faithful children of God, His design for us is never to be in DEBT! In Psalms 37, my good friend David declares plainly: “I was young, and now am old but I have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor their children begging bread… They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed. (vs 25-26)
   Most of us find our selves in debt because we spend more than what we need. We spend on unnecessary things or we buy things on impulse just because we saw it and we bought if without thinking it over. Or, we go on a business endeavor on our own without seeking God first and then we lose a lot of investment just because we were deciding on our own without consulting our Father about it. Worse, still, we are not giving our tithes and offering first before spending our money. If you were entrusted with the money of an organization, or the church, always make sure that you have a clean record of the cash inflow and outflow. You do not need to be an accountant to keep a clean record of the money you are holding. What is important is that you must have a clear explanation of every centavo that you received and every centavo that you spend. You must be faithful in this area because people might accuse you of using the money and even if you are honest if you have no record to show where the money went, you are in big trouble.
   If you were to be blessed today on how faithful are you in handing finances, would you pass? Or fail? Evaluate yourself in the sight of God and change for the better. Remember, who would entrust spiritual riches to you if you cannot be trusted with money???

3. Faithfulness in Borrowed things – “and if you have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?” (Luke 16:12) What are the things you have which are not yours???

   a.) Money – (utang) Woe to thee if you dare steal the money which belongs to God. You have no right to spend the money that is not yours! There are two cases where the money is not yours. If you have $100.00, one tenth of it IS NOT YOURS… Which means you have actually only $90.00 to spend. Second, if you owe $20 to your friend, that means from $90.00, you will deduct the $20 you had borrowed from your friend. So your total money is only $70.00. You have no right to spend money that is not yours! My friend, let it be your goal to live a DEBT-FREE LIFE!
   b.) Borrowed things – Returned all borrowed things in better condition, not worse. The common situation is like this: somebody borrowed a guitar and after a long time, the owner came to get it (because it was not returned immediately after using it) and when the borrower was giving back the guitar he says…”sorry ha. Nabali yung string.” Maybe this situation happened to you, maybe you were the borrower (mahiya ka naman) or maybe you were the owner. As the owner receives back his guitar, the traditional response is “okay lang” is probably mixed with tears plus a decision never again to lend his precious guitar to him. What is your reputation as a borrower? If people do not lend their things to you, do not feel bad. Maybe you deserve it. However, of people  are glad in sharing their things with you, maybe you have a good record of stewardship which means they can entrust their precious possessions to you. If you are this type, blessed are you. If not, better get up…. Wake Up!!!! Be changed!!!
   IF YOU LOST WHATEVER YOU BORROWED, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO REPLACE IT. Don’t just say “ sorry… it was lost”…
   c.) Borrowed Time – One of the hardest things to break is the “Filipino Time” tradition. However, it is a good thing that as we grow deeper in our Christian fait, the Filipino traditions are erased and replaced with Christian principles. Every time you set an appointment with somebody, it is your responsibility to fulfill it. For instance, you have decided to meet at 4:00pm with your friend. When that time comes, 4:00 pm is not you time only, but you are also spending the time of your friend. That means if you were late for 30 minutes and you arrived at 4:30, you wasted of his precious time. Get this clear??? YOU WASTED HIS TIME!!! How many times we have been guilty of wasting somebody else’s time. Usually during practices or meetings, we all AGREE to come at a certain time. We all say, “YES, I CAN MAKE IT” and then you are not there…. What do you call that in the most direct terms??? LIAR!!! Let us repent from this sin. We are so swift to condemn a person who steals money, items, things… but my friend, you steal the time of other people… what a shame!!!

4. Faithfulness in Responsibilities – In 2 samuel 17:20-22, David goes to the battleground to bring food for his brothers. He was just a kid and not worthy to fight the enemy of Israel but his very simple actions reflect a responsible servant who is faithful in his responsibilities: First, he rose up early (not late) and left the sheep with a keeper (vs. 20).    This simple action means that David is faithful in his responsibility as a shepherd. Imagine, he must have been so excited to go to the battleground but he did not leave his sheep unattended! This is a simple but powerful sign of faithfulness to responsibilities! In verse 22, David now approaches the battleground. He begins to get excited and looks around but where do you think he goes to, first of all?... “And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army…” Did you see that? He was so excited but he did not forget his responsibility. He first left his things to the one in charge of the baggage before he ran to his brothers! First, he made sure his baggage was OK before going to the battleground. What a responsible and faithful kid. No wonder God entrusted to him the whole nation of Israel (God’s sheep) because he was faithful in taking care of an ordinary sheep.
   In early years of David’s life, he was a shepherd. He was trained to protect the
sheep from wolves and wild animals. In fact, he fought and killed wild animals that threatened the lives of his sheep. He then trained with a stone and a slingshot. Instead of sleeping during the afternoons, he probably practiced consistently until he mastered the use of his weapon – the very weapon he used in killing Goliath, the giant! If David was lazy, he could have just slept during the hot afternoons while tending his sheep, but NO, David was faithful in his responsibilities that’s why God entrusted to him a whole nation of “sheep” : ISRAEL. When David was king, he protected Israel from many enemies and he was known as one of the greatest warrior kings. Was he trained in PMA? WESPOINT? SCOTLAND YARD?  NO SIR!!!  He was trained in the lonely mountaintops as a young shepherd. What about his music? He wrote most of the psalms and when he played the harp, it was so anointed that demons could not stand it! Was he trained in the Best Music Schools of Israel? NO SIR. He worshipped in the mountains and practiced until he excelled in his instrument.
   Therefore in one of his psalms, he boldly declares “…Play skillfully with a loud noise…” (Psalms 33:3)

WARNING: If you are not faithful in your responsibilities, God will raise up for Himself a faithful servant who will do His will.

   In 1 Samuel 2:35, God said: “I will raise me up faithful priest that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind…”
   Eli was a high priest at that time and his two sons who ministered in the temple were doing evil things in the sight of God. They were not faithful of their calling as priests and their father Eli could not correct them. In his displeasure, God himself remove them from office resulting to their early death and God then raised up Samuel. His faithful servant. No one is INDISPENSABLE! If you will not do it, you have lost the blessings! God will raise for Himself a servant who is FAITHFUL to do what he wants.
   Finally in Eclessiastes 9:10 “Whatsoever your hand finds to do it, do it with all thy might…” No matter how small you think is your responsibility, HIT IT WITH YOUR BEST SHOT!!!

ENEMY OF FAITHFULNESS: There are two basic enemies that we face when we decide to be faithful in al responsibilities.

1. Circumstances – There are outside factors that affect you and your decisions. These are the problems, situations and environment factors that affect your decisions to go on or not to go on with your responsibilities.

   Example: You want to be consistent and faithful in going to your Bible studies. However, one day it rained so hard. Will this rain stop you from going there? This will be a test on your faithfulness. For a person who is not faithful, there will always be excuses for not going.

2. Emotions – A man walking in faith should not depend on his emotions. One sign of a mature Christian is when he is able to control his emotions. Walking by faith has absolutely nothing to do with emotions. Sometime we FEEL like giving up, or we fulfill our responsibility. That is unfaithfulness. No matter how weak we feel or how low we must stand up and believe the WORD OF GOD saying that Greater is He that is in me that he that is in the world. If we minister according to our mood, or if the dictates of our flesh are still honored, then we are truly serving ourselves and we are the lord of our ministry. That is because we serve only whenever we feel like it. If our head hurts, or if we find an excuse, we easily neglect our responsibility but if we feel good, if we are blessed, and if we feel happy, we are excited to do our ministry. My friend, if you are still this person, there is no other way but REPENT and change your ways. God is not your Lord of ALL, He can not be your Lord at all!!!

   SOLUTION IN FIGHTING ENEMY

     Our weapon is defeating the enemy of circumstance and emotions is a firm DECISION to continue doing God’s command no matter what!!! “No matter how hard, no matter how painful, no matter how hot, no matter what, our Lord will remain FAITHFUL”
    You are faithful if you are full of FAITH: The key to being FAITHFUL is TO BE FULL OF FAITH!!! FAITH is the constant COMMITMENT to believe that FATHER KNOWS BEST AGAIST ALL ODDS… NO MATTER WHAT!
    REMEMBER JOSPEH : A MAN FULL OF FAITH IN GOD.


A FAITHFUL MAN OF GOD

   God is looking for men like David, Joseph, Peter, John… men who are full of faith and therefore they become faithful men. In fact, Paul instructs Timothy to look for FAITHFUL men who would be entrusted with God’s Word so that they would be enabled to teach. The first requirement of a minister of God is FAITHFULNESS. Never did God look for talented people and prayed that they will be faithful. The instruction is: “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to FAITHFUL MEN who shall be able to teach others also” (1 Timothy 2:2)

ARE YOU ONE OF THEM?

ON FAITHFULNESS:

If you turn it on, turn it off
If you open it, close it
If you unlock it, lock it up
If you break it, admit it
If you cannot fix it, call someone who can
If you borrowed it, return it
If you value it, take care of it
If you make a mess, clean it up
If you move it, put it back
If it belongs to someone else and you want to use it, ASK
If it is none of your business, don’t ask
If you don’t know how to operate it, leave it alone
If it will brighten someone’s day, say it
If it will destroy someone’s reputation, SHUT UP!

Kung binuksan mo, isara mo

REWARDS OF FAITHFULNESS

1. Blessings – 2 Samuel 22:26; Psalm 18:25

2 Samuel 22:26 - With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
   
Psalms 18:25 - With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;

2. God’s Protection

Psalm 31:23 - O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

Psalm 101:6 - Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

Proverbs 2:8 - He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.

3. Smile and welcome embrace of Jesus
Matthew 25:21-23 - His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
 22 - He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
 23 - His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

When all has been said and done, and we all face the final judgment, all I am waiting for is the warm embrace of my Father as He welcomes me with the sweetest words…”WELCOME MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT; THOU HAS BEEN FAITHFUL OVER A FEW THINGS, I WILL MAKE THEE RULER OVER MANY THINGS… ENTER THOU INTO THE JOY OF THE LORD”.
